১৬ বছর পর ,ধর্ষণের পর হত্যার দায় নিজের কাঁধে নিলো ভাই ।

১৯৯৫ সাল। নেদারল্যান্ডসের শান্ত এক সকালে স্কুলে যাওয়ার পথে নিখোঁজ হয় ১৫ বছর বয়সী কিশোরী নিকোল ভ্যান ডেন হার্ক। 

কিছুদিন পর তার মরদেহ খুঁজে পাওয়া যায়। তদন্তে জানা যায়, তাকে ধ/র্ষ/ণে/র পর হ-ত্যা করা হয়েছে। কিন্তু বহু চেষ্টা করেও খুনিকে খুঁজে বের করতে পারেনি পুলিশ। ধীরে ধীরে আলোচিত সেই মামলাটি হারিয়ে যায় সময়ের অন্ধকারে।

কেটে যায় দীর্ঘ ১৬ বছর।

হঠাৎ একদিন ফেসবুকে বিস্ফোরক এক পোস্ট দেন নিকোলের সৎভাই অ্যান্ডি। সেখানে তিনি লেখেন, “আমি আমার ছোট বোনকে হ/ত্যা করেছি।”

পোস্টটি মুহূর্তেই ভাইরাল হয়ে যায়। পুলিশ দ্রুত অ্যান্ডিকে গ্রেপ্তার করে। সবাই ধরে নেয়, এতদিন পর অবশেষে হয়তো খু-নি-র মুখোশ খুলেছে।

কিন্তু বাস্তবতা ছিল আরও অবিশ্বাস্য।

অ্যান্ডি আসলে খু-নি ছিলেন না। তিনি ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবেই মিথ্যা স্বীকারোক্তি দিয়েছিলেন। তার লক্ষ্য ছিল একটাই- পুলিশকে বাধ্য করা যেন তারা আবার মামলাটি চালু করে এবং আধুনিক প্রযুক্তিতে নিকোলের ম/র/দে/হে/র ডিএনএ পরীক্ষা করে।

কারণ অ্যান্ডির বিশ্বাস ছিল- প্রকৃত খু-নি এখনও মুক্ত অবস্থায় ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছে।

অবশেষে তার সেই ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ পরিকল্পনা কাজ করে। নতুন করে ডিএনএ পরীক্ষা শুরু হয়। আর সেখানেই বেরিয়ে আসে আসল সত্য।

২০১৪ সালে পুলিশ গ্রেপ্তার করে এক ব্যক্তিকে, যার বিরুদ্ধে আগেও ধ/র্ষ/ণে/র অভিযোগ ছিল। আদালত শেষ পর্যন্ত তাকে দোষী সাব্যস্ত করে ১২ বছরের কারাদণ্ড দেয়।

এভাবেই ১৬ বছর ধরে চাপা পড়ে থাকা এক হ-ত্যা-কা-ণ্ডে-র রহস্যের উন্মোচন হয় একজন ভাইয়ের অসম্ভব সাহসী ও বিতর্কিত সিদ্ধান্তের মাধ্যমে।

What if the truth about a murder only surfaced because someone lied about committing it? 

In 1995, fifteen-year-old Nicole van den Hurk left her grandmother’s home in Eindhoven just after 5 a.m., biking to her part-time job at a supermarket. She never arrived. That night, police found her bicycle in a creek. Nearly seven weeks later, on November 22, her body was discovered in woodland near Lierop, hidden beneath branches and yard waste. 

Investigators confirmed she had been sexually assaulted and killed, but the technology of the time produced no usable DNA match. The case went cold, and for years, her family lived with silence instead of answers.

Then in 2011, something unexpected happened. Nicole’s stepbrother falsely confessed to the crime. His story quickly unraveled, but it forced authorities to reopen the case. A cold-case team ordered an exhumation so forensic experts could retest evidence using modern DNA techniques. 

That decision changed everything. New samples were extracted, and the profile was entered into the Dutch national database. It did not match the stepbrother. It matched a man with no family connection to Nicole and no prior link to the investigation: Andy van der Meyde. He was arrested, charged, and in 2014 convicted of Nicole’s rape and murder.

Here is the unsettling turn. The confession that wasn’t true became the key to uncovering what was. A lie triggered science, and science delivered justice nearly two decades later. This case is not about coincidence or closure through luck. It is about what happens when persistence, technology, and accountability finally meet. 

Sometimes the truth doesn’t arrive on time, but it still finds its way back.

Justice can be delayed, but it is never erased.
